The clear high-altitude atmosphere and the absence of light pollution make Cortina d’Ampezzo one of the most renowned European destinations for observing the night sky. Thanks to the local Astronomical Association, one can access an Observatory, equipped with two powerful telescopes and other high-precision instruments through which 41 supernovae and an asteroid, renamed 50240 Cortina, were discovered: from here, at 1780 meters above sea level, the gaudy stream of the Milky Way undulates slowly, majestically, between the sharp crests of the Dolomites, creating a spectacle of primeval, disconcerting beauty.
